Boy, Dog, Accordion, by Andrew Blackman

New short story published

Belated news that I had a short story published earlier this year by a small Australian publisher, In Short Publishing. The story is called Boy, Dog, Accordion, and it’s published as a pocket-size book.

Belated news that I had a short story published earlier this year by a small Australian publisher, In Short Publishing. The story is called Boy, Dog, Accordion, and it’s published as a pocket-size book. Yes, one short story in a single book. It’s something I’ve come across occasionally, and I’m not sure why it isn’t done more often in this age of shortening spans of attention and time.

Anyway, here’s the cover image:

Boy, Dog, Accordion, by Andrew Blackman

I suppose part of the reason I didn’t mention it earlier is that I know most of you are not based in Australia, and this is more of a local thing—the book is available for international shipping, but the cost is very high. And there’s no ebook, which I actually like. The publisher is focused on well-made physical products. But if you happen to find yourself in Melbourne, see if you can spot it in a bookshop there!

I’ve also been pretty busy on my travels (hello from Greece!) and on writing, freelancing, reading and so on. Blogging doesn’t take very long, but still I struggle to find the time—or perhaps, more accurately, the mental energy and space—for it.

This is not an apology: in ten years of blogging, I’ve seen plenty of blogs come and go, and I’m not indulging in the delusion that people are desperately disappointed not to see a new post from me every week. But I think the extent to which I blog (and also comment on other people’s blogs) generally reflects the extent to which I feel either comfortable or overwhelmed by life. Social media also doesn’t help much, eh?

Anyway, hope you’re all doing well. I still appreciate and think about all my regular readers from years gone by, even if I’m not so active these days! Maybe that’ll change, although I’m not setting any targets or deadlines. Blogging should be fun, after all.

  1. Hi, Andrew! Good to know that you’re still there. My husband also has a blog and I know how much time it is needed to keep going. Don’t worry if you cannot do it as often as you’d like to, because there are better thigs to do and life is short. 🙂

  2. Warm hello from Barbados in the Caribbean, Andrew!

Congrats on your publishing news above – so wonderful! The cute (that’s what word came to mind 1st) cover gets your attention.

You’re one of my favourite bloggers and what your post did was comfort me in the fact I’m not alone in being inconsistent. Life does get in the way sometimes. But also, we’re our hardest audience. I certainly can relate to the chasing perfection (so “stealing” that quote) to practically the point of paralysis. However, I believe my issue for almost a year was frankly, writer’s burnout combined with grappling with transitional hormones. Now it feels indescribably great to write again but I resolved to set looser goals and pace myself.

Anyway, my friend, you are not alone. Thank you for reminding me I’m not either.

    1. Hi Sandra, good to hear from you! Yes, I agree that we can be our own hardest audience. I sometimes joke that I’ve finally achieved the dream of being my own boss, only to discover that I’m the meanest and most demanding boss I’ve ever had 😉 Thank you for your wonderful comment and for making me feel that I am not alone. I’m so glad to hear that you’re overcoming the burnout and writing again, and hope that things go well with the looser goals and pacing. ??
