Giveaway!

I haven’t done much writing this week. I’ve been helping my wife launch her new photography website, fotodisiac. I have learned more about CSS, mySQL databases, wp-config files and the like than I ever wanted to!

Anyway it is finally up and running now, and to celebrate, she is giving away a book, Tom Ang’s How to Photograph Absolutely Everything. To win the book, all you have to do is leave a comment on the site before this Sunday. Click here to enter. [Link removed as the contest is now closed]

  1. Thanks for letting us know. I looked at it. It’s got a nice title, it sticks in the mind (the site, I mean). My boyfriend is a lot into photography and does really great photos. I’ll tell him about it. Maybe he would like to enter.

  2. Thanks Caroline! She’s quite nervous about launching a new site for online classes – she’s always taught in the ‘real’ world before now. So she’ll appreciate the feedback. Hope your boyfriend likes the site too, and maybe wins the book!

  3. Hi Andrew! How are you doing? Just saw fotodisiac, it’s looking very nice. All the css work seems to be spot on πŸ™‚ Congratulations to your wife and best wishes for the new venture!

  4. Thanks Nivedita! It was a bit of a struggle but we got there in the end πŸ™‚ And probably that knowledge I picked up will be useful – maybe I’ll redesign this site… when I’ve recovered a bit!

Does anyone else get involved in the tech side of things, or do you prefer just to pick a pre-designed template and get blogging?

  5. Hello Andrew,
I like Fotodisiac, it looks interesting and the photos are beautiful.
Personally I dislike “the tech side of things” and I admire anyone who can do that well. Even with a pre-designed template it’s not that easy, especially when you want to add new things here and there and they just don’t fit. But I try. πŸ™‚

  6. @Andrew Blackman
I like to pick up a very basic template which does not come with its own baggage. That way I have more freedom to tweak things. I get into the technical bits often, I guess it’s because I’m a software engineer it doesn’t feel like I am doing anything different.

  7. Hi Delia, thanks very much! Genie said you left a comment, so thanks for that, and good luck in the contest πŸ™‚ You’re right, even with a template you often find yourself wanting to tweak things, add widgets and so on, and things can change unexpectedly!

Hi Nivedita, I forgot you were a software enginner! I feel even more proud now that you complimented our css work πŸ™‚ That’s a good idea to pick a basic template and then change it as much as you want to. Unravelling how the thing has been set up is half the battle, so less “baggage” is probably good!

  8. This is really wonderful, Andrew! Congratulations to your wife and best wishes on the new venture! I checked fotodisiac, and it is really wonderful. I loved reading the introduction on the front page and exploring around the website. I am tempted to join the beginner’s course now πŸ™‚

  9. Hi Vishy,
Glad you liked it! Yes, do join the beginner’s course. I’m biased, of course, but I really think Genie is a talented teacher, and based on the testimonials so do a lot of other people πŸ™‚
