It tugged at my heart to read about that poor man and knowing that there are thousands and thousands out there like him - working so much they can't even see their families. If anything will help us learn in this life, it is to appreciate our own situation, no matter how dire. You do seem awfully lucky! I always need to be reminded of how blessed I am, too, even though my family isn't in a place where I imagine we would be. I always look back to Dave Eggers's What is the What (re: the Lost Boys of Sudan) and am always left amazed that my life is still so privileged, despite what I normally think.
